San Cristóbal de La Laguna
Base in La Laguna for 1–2 nights if you want the old town and cool nights; day-trippers from Santa Cruz or the north coast get the centre in 3–4 hours.
La Laguna is the old capital of Tenerife, a UNESCO-listed grid of 16th-century streets about 550 m above sea level, so it runs several degrees cooler than Santa Cruz. The historic centre is small, walkable and car-free. Most travellers see it as a half-day from Santa Cruz, Puerto de la Cruz or the airport, but one or two nights here gives you quiet evenings and easy tram or bus links to the rest of the island.

Get around
The historic centre is pedestrianised and you can walk it end to end in about 20 minutes. MetroTenerife tram Line 1 links La Laguna with Santa Cruz, about every 10 min, 20 min, terminating at Trinidad. Titsa buses cover the island from the Intercambiador. Cars must park outside the old town; the Las Quinteras car park is on the eastern edge (€0.60/hr, max €7.50/day) and fills up.
