Where to stay in San Antonio: best neighborhoods and hotels

Two areas cover almost every trip. Pundaquit is the coastal barangay where the boatmen, the beach and most resorts sit; Poblacion is the town proper with the public market, bus stops and the cheapest beds. If your reason for coming is Capones Island, Anawangin Cove or Nagsasa Cove, sleep in Pundaquit and walk to the boats in the morning. If you are passing through, on a tight budget, or arriving late by bus, Poblacion is simpler and cheaper.

There is no real nightlife strip and no large hotel district. San Antonio is a small municipality on the Zambales coast, roughly three to four hours by road from Manila, so where you sleep is mostly a question of beach versus town.

Prices are 2026 estimates for a double room in the dry season. Expect lower rates in the wet months (roughly Jun–Nov) and higher ones on long weekends and holidays.

Pundaquit is the postcard side of San Antonio: a curved bay, fishing boats pulled up on the sand, and a road of resorts and guesthouses running back from the water. Boats for Capones Island and the coves leave from this beach, usually early morning, so staying here removes the tricycle ride at dawn. Evenings are very quiet — a few grills and sari-sari stores, no bars to speak of. Rooms range from basic fan cottages to aircon resorts with pools; the beachfront strip fills first on weekends.

Poblacion is the working centre: public market, church, schools, bus and van terminals, and the practical stuff you need — pharmacies, a few ATMs, cheap eateries. It is not a beach destination, and the shore here is a short tricycle ride from Pundaquit. What you get is price and convenience: fan rooms from around ₱600, easy arrivals if your bus lands after dark, and food options beyond resort kitchens.

Between the two, tricycles are the standard link and the ride takes about 10–15 minutes (check the fare locally). Some travellers split the stay: one night in town after a late arrival, then move to Pundaquit for the boat trips.

San Antonio is cheaper than Boracay or El Nido but not as cheap as it looks online, because beachfront supply is small. Budget roughly ₱600–1,500 for a fan room in town, ₱1,200–2,500 for a Pundaquit guesthouse, and ₱3,000–6,000 for a beachfront resort room in peak season. Camping or a homestay bed runs ₱300–800 per person.

Add the extras: tricycle rides within town, boat hire for island hopping (priced per boat, not per person), environmental or entrance fees at the coves, and meals. Many small places take cash only or add a card fee, so carry pesos. A 10% tip is normal where no service charge is added.

Book Pundaquit beachfront rooms one to two weeks ahead for a normal weekend and one to two months ahead for Holy Week, Christmas, New Year and the Dec–May dry season. Weekday rates are often lower and the beach is emptier.

Ask three questions before you pay: is the room aircon or fan, is there a generator or backup power, and how far is the walk to the boat launch. In the wet months, check whether the road to your guesthouse floods and whether boat trips are running at all — trips can be cancelled for rough seas.

If you are coming straight from Manila, arrange your transfer before you arrive; the last leg from the highway to Pundaquit is by tricycle.
