Sambalpur is the biggest city in western Odisha and the practical base for Hirakud Dam, the longest earthen dam in the world, and the Samaleswari Temple, the presiding deity of the region. It is a working textile and trading town, not a sightseeing circuit, so one day covers the core and a second day buys you Huma or a wildlife sanctuary. Most travellers reach it by train from Bhubaneswar, Rourkela or Raipur and use it as a stop on the way to Jharsuguda or the Similipal area.

Get around
The city has no metro and no reliable city bus network for visitors; auto-rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws cover short hops, and app cabs are thin on the ground. Agree the fare before you get in, or ask your hotel to book a car by the hour for Hirakud and Huma.
