Saltillo
Give Saltillo one full day: colonial centre on foot in the morning, Museo del Desierto in the afternoon. Two nights if you add the mountains.
Saltillo is the capital of Coahuila and a colonial city on the old Camino Real, now a government, university and manufacturing centre about an hour west of Monterrey. The historic centre is compact and walkable; the two big museums sit outside it. Most travellers pass through on the Monterrey–San Luis Potosí corridor, and one night plus a full day covers the city well.

Get around
The centro histórico is small enough to walk. DiDi, Uber and inDriver all operate in the city; taxis wait at the main plaza and the bus station, so agree the fare before you get in. Local buses marked Periférico link the bus station with the centre, and the TranVía trolley does a hop-on hop-off loop downtown (not on Mondays).

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; a kiss on the right cheek among friends; avoid: Skipping 'buenos días' when entering a shop
- Punctuality: Be on time for tours and buses; avoid: Expecting social events to start on time
- Talking: Warm small talk, family, food, football; avoid: Jokes about cartels, the wall or migration
- Churches: Covered shoulders, quiet; avoid: Photos during mass
- Dining: Say 'provecho' to other diners when leaving; avoid: Rushing the waiter
Scams and watch-outs
- Ask the taxi fare before you set off; meters are not always used.
- The bus station is 4 km south of the centre — allow time and a taxi, not a walk with bags.
- Summer afternoons are hot and the rain peaks in July–September; plan museum time for the middle of the day.
- Northern Mexico sees occasional violence: stay in lit central areas after dark, avoid casinos and empty streets, and travel with someone at night.
Central Saltillo is calm by day and the sights are close together. The real cautions are night-time streets away from the centre, unmarked taxi fares and summer heat; keep to lit areas, share rides and agree prices first.
