Salt Lake City is the capital of Utah and the hub of the Wasatch Front, a metro of over a million people between the Wasatch Mountains and the Great Salt Lake. It is the headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, whose Temple Square anchors downtown, and it hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics and will host them again in 2034. Most travellers use it as a two-night city stop or a winter base for the ski resorts 30–45 minutes up the canyons. The big southern national parks are about a five-hour drive away, closer to Las Vegas, so do not treat Salt Lake as a Zion or Moab base.

Get around
UTA runs TRAX light rail (Green Line from the airport to downtown, about 20 min, $2.50 one way), the S-Line streetcar to Sugar House, and FrontRunner commuter rail north to Ogden and south to Provo ($2.50–9.70 by distance). The street grid is a coordinate system: 500 East is five blocks east of Temple Square, 1300 South is 13 blocks south. A car is the practical way to reach the canyons, ski resorts and the Great Salt Lake; downtown itself is walkable.
