Salinas
One night, or a half-day stop between Monterey and Highway 101: the Steinbeck Center and Oldtown take 3–4 hours, and the coast is 30 min away.
Salinas is a farm town of about 164,000 people, 30 minutes inland from Monterey Bay, and the boyhood home of John Steinbeck. Oldtown is compact and walkable, with the National Steinbeck Center as the anchor. Most travellers use it as a cheaper bed for Monterey or a break on Highway 101 rather than a destination in itself.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer afternoons can be hot inland while Monterey stays cool: bring a layer for the coast.
- Some blocks away from Oldtown are quiet at night; keep to lit streets and drive or take a taxi after dark.
- Rodeo week in July fills every room in town: book months ahead or sleep in Monterey.
- Rural Highway 101 stretches have little between exits: fuel up before you leave town.
Salinas is a working farm city, not a resort: Oldtown is fine on foot in daylight and early evening, but drive or take a taxi after dark and keep valuables out of sight in parked cars.
