Salford is Manchester's western neighbour across the River Irwell, joined to it by a 5-minute train and a 20-minute tram. Its headline sights — the Lowry, MediaCity and the Imperial War Museum North — sit at Salford Quays, two miles west of the centre. Central Salford itself is a residential, student and budget-hotel zone with a cathedral, a small museum and a Victorian street, useful mainly as a cheaper bed next to Manchester's Victoria–Deansgate strip.
