Salem
Salem, Ohio
Give Salem half a day: two historic districts, three Underground Railroad houses, then drive on. Sleep here only if you want a cheap base for Youngstown.
Salem is a town of about 12,000 in Columbiana County, founded by Quakers in 1806 and busy in the abolitionist movement before the Civil War. Two National Register districts and several Underground Railroad houses survive, plus a Burchfield homestead. It is an exurb of Youngstown on US-62, so most visitors see it as a half-day between Youngstown and Canton, not a destination in itself.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances between sights are short on the map but dull on foot: drive between clusters.
- Several historic houses are private homes or open by appointment only — check before you go.
- Winter brings ice and lake-effect snow; summer afternoons are humid.
- Rural roads at night are dark with deer; drive slowly after dusk.
Salem is a small, quiet town and violent crime is rare; the real risks are driving (ice, deer, dark rural roads) and long walks on roads with no pavement. Lock the car and keep to lit streets downtown after dark.
