Salem is a working Tamil Nadu city of about 690,000 people, a Southern Railway divisional hub and the state's busiest bus terminus, so it works as a stop between Bengaluru, Chennai and Coimbatore rather than a sightseeing destination in itself. Its own draws are the 17th-century Kailasanathar temple at Tharamangalam, the Shevapet silver and textile trade, and the hill station of Yercaud 30 km up the road. Two nights is enough to see the city and make the Yercaud run; one night is enough if you are only changing trains.

Get around
City buses are the cheap default and run 24 hours on the Junction–bus-stands route 13. Auto-rickshaws have no meter and no fixed rate: agree the fare before you get in. Taxis are cheap by Indian big-city standards and are the sane choice after dark or with bags.

Salem is a normal Indian city and is safe by day; the real risks are heat, road traffic, unmetered auto fares and the usual petty theft around crowded bus stands. Women travelling alone report more staring than in Chennai or Bengaluru — cover up, avoid empty streets after dark, and use app or hotel-arranged taxis at night.
