Saldanha
Saldanha Bay
Half a day for the harbour and a waterside lunch, or a night if you windsurf or kite. Not a destination on its own — combine with Langebaan or Paternoster.
Saldanha is a working port and fishing town on the West Coast, 145 km north of Cape Town. Its sheltered bay is a watersports hub, but the town itself is functional rather than scenic. Most travellers stop for a meal on the water or use it as a base for Langebaan Lagoon and the West Coast National Park.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say hello and ask how someone is before any request; avoid: Launching straight into a question
- Handshakes: Three-part African handshake with friends; a normal handshake with strangers; avoid: Refusing an offered hand
- Elders: Use Mr/Mrs or 'Mama', 'Baba' respectfully in townships and rural areas; avoid: First names with older people you have just met
- Braai invitations: Bring meat or drinks, and arrive on 'African time'; avoid: Taking over the fire
- Photos: Ask first, especially in townships and villages; avoid: Photographing children without a parent's permission
- Politics and race: Ask questions and listen; avoid: Lecturing on history or crime
Scams and watch-outs
- Strong south-easterly wind in summer afternoons — hold on to hats and loose items.
- The iron-ore port is industrial; swimming near the harbour is not advised.
- Restaurants may close early on weeknights; check hours ahead.
Saldanha is generally safe, but standard precautions apply: lock your car, don't leave valuables visible, and avoid walking alone after dark in quiet areas. The main risk is wind-related — flying debris and driving gusts.
