Salatiga
Give Salatiga one night as a cool-weather stop between Semarang and Solo, or skip it if you only have a week on Java.
Salatiga is a small hill town at 600 m between Semarang and Solo, cooler than either and cheap to sleep in. The sights are minor: a square, a hilltop viewpoint over Rawa Pening lake, two small temples and a theme park 8 km out. It works as a one-night break on the Semarang–Solo road, or as a base for Kopeng and Ambarawa, not as a destination on its own.

Get around
Angkota minivans (numbered lines, e.g. line 5 from the southern edge to Plaza Taman Sari) cost Rp3,000 for adults and Rp2,000 for students. No public transport runs along Jalan Jenderal Sudirman through the market, so you walk that stretch. GoJek and Grab work in town; drivers usually call to confirm your spot, so have a landmark and a rough Indonesian sentence ready. For Bukit Cinta, Candi Dukuh, Saloka or Kopeng you need a car, a scooter or a hired driver — confirm any angkota service to Kopeng locally before relying on it.

- Jalan Jenderal Sudirman and the clock-tower roundabout
- Town centre: hotels, the market, food stalls and the Plaza Taman Sari mall all within walking distance. Best for one night without a car.
- Jalan Diponegoro (north, toward Kopeng)
- Dutch-era street with the 1935 Catholic church; quieter, on the road up to Kopeng. Good if you are heading to Merbabu next.
- Tingkir and the southern edge
- Around Tingkir Terminal, where intercity buses stop. Practical for a late arrival or an early departure, little else.
- Muncul and Rawa Pening side (west)
- Village stays and campsites near the springs and the lake, out of town (travel time check). Only with your own transport or a booked transfer.
