Go to Salalah in the khareef monsoon (roughly late June to early September) for green hills, waterfalls and cool mist; outside that window it is a drier warm-weather beach and frankincense-history stop, worth less unless you're passing through southern Oman anyway.
Salalah is the capital of Dhofar in southern Oman, where the annual khareef monsoon turns the coastal hills green and drops temperatures while the rest of the Gulf swelters. It sits on ancient frankincense trade routes, with ruined ports and groves a short drive out of town. Outside the khareef the landscape reverts to dry scrub and the city is a quieter beach and history stop.

Get around
A rental car or hired driver is the standard way to reach the coast and hills; ride-hailing coverage is thinner than in Muscat. Distances between sights are large, so plan routes rather than walking between them.

Language
Arabic is the official language and road signs are bilingual. English is widely used in hotels, malls, car hire and tourism, and by the large South Asian workforce; in villages and with older Omanis a few words of Arabic help a lot.
