Salaberry-de-Valleyfield
Go for one night if you are driving between Montréal and the US border, or for the early-July regatta; otherwise it is a half-day stop, not a base.
Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, usually shortened to Valleyfield, sits on an island in the St. Lawrence about 65 km west of Montréal, with the Beauharnois Canal on its south side. It is a small French-speaking city of about 40,000 whose draw is water: a 400-berth marina on the old canal, a beach park in the centre, and a hydroplane regatta that fills the bay every July. Sights are few and walkable; most travellers see it as a night off the highway or a day trip from Montréal.

Get around
The centre is walkable: marina, Parc Delpha-Sauvé, basilica and Victoria Street restaurants sit within about 20 minutes on foot. For anything else you need a car or the local shared-taxi service (Société de transport de Salaberry-de-Valleyfield), which runs on reservation — call ahead, do not expect a bus every few minutes. A free downtown shuttle has run as a pilot on circuit 11; confirm it is still operating before relying on it.
