Sakurai
桜井
Half-day from Nara or Osaka: Hase-dera temple and Ōmiwa Shrine, then back. Not worth a night unless you walk the Yamanobe-no-michi trail.
Sakurai was briefly Japan's capital in the 5th century and holds two major religious sites: Hase-dera, a Shingon temple with a 10 m Kannon statue and 700 peonies, and Ōmiwa Shrine, one of the country's oldest, facing Mount Miwa. The city is small and quiet; most visitors come from Nara (40 min by train) or Osaka (1 h) for a few hours.
