North, Saint Petersburg: neighborhood guide

The North is everything beyond the Bolshaya Nevka, the river that separates it from the Petrograd Side. It is not one place. The strip closest to the center, roughly from the Neva up to Chyornaya Rechka and Kushelevka and across to Polyustrovo, is the historical Vyborg Side: older streets, institutes and parks. Further out, the Vyborgsky, Primorsky, Kalininsky and Krasnogvardeysky districts are mostly Soviet and post-Soviet apartment blocks, built for commuters rather than visitors.

The far northwest is different again. The Kurortny District runs along the Gulf of Finland to Zelenogorsk, a beach resort that Saint Petersburg's wealthy adopted in the mid-19th century and that later drew Finns and, after the war, Russians again. It is a day out, not a base.

Sights are scattered and modest. The Academy of Forestry with its park, the Military Medical Academy, the Polytechnic University and the Buddhist Datsan sit in the quarters nearest the center. Beyond those, expect residential streets. The area also borders the Right Bank to the southeast, which sees very few visitors.

Choose the North if price and quiet matter more than proximity, or if you are in town for a specific institution, a long stay, or the Datsan. The Vyborg Side around Chyornaya Rechka and Polyustrovo gives you a real neighborhood with metro access and a short ride to the center. Hotels and apartments here are usually cheaper than equivalent rooms in the Center (2026 estimate; check live prices).

Skip it on a first visit of three or four days. You would spend 30–50 minutes a day on the metro, and evenings in the historic core would end with a long ride home. The Center, the Petrograd Side or Vasilievsky Island put the sights within walking distance.

Zelenogorsk is a separate decision: a good overnight only if you want the beach and do not mind the distance from the city.

Food here serves residents, which is the point: cafés, bakeries, Georgian and Uzbek kitchens, and cheap canteen-style places near the metro stations and the universities. Around Chyornaya Rechka, Polyustrovo and the Polytechnic campus you will find the densest cluster, plus coffee shops for students. Prices run below the center.

Near the Datsan and in the newer Primorsky blocks, look at the ground floors of residential buildings and small malls; that is where the reliable everyday places sit. Zelenogorsk is a summer town: cafés along the shore open with the season and close outside it.

Vegetarian options exist but are not the norm; ask, and expect meat and fish stocks in most soups.

The metro is the backbone. Chyornaya Rechka, Ozerki, Parnas and Komendantsky Prospekt are the useful stations for the residential north; from Chyornaya Rechka the ride to the center is roughly 15–25 minutes depending on your stop (check). Buses and trolleybuses fill the gaps between stations, and taxis are cheap by Western standards.

From Pulkovo Airport, allow about an hour by taxi or a metro-plus-bus combination to the northern districts (check); the airport sits south of the city, so this is a cross-town run. To Zelenogorsk, use the suburban train from Finlyandsky station or the bus along the Primorskoye highway; both take around an hour (check).

Distances inside the North are long. Pick accommodation within a few minutes of a metro entrance rather than trusting the map.
