Weather windows: dry season, summer and storm season
December to April is the dry, breezy window. Trade winds keep the coast comfortable, rain is short and scattered, and the sea is calm enough for ferry days to Anguilla and St Barths. This is when every restaurant, beach club and excursion runs, and when you pay the most.
May and June are the sweet spot for value. The wind eases, the sea stays swimmable, rain usually arrives as brief afternoon showers, and prices drop before the storm season builds. If your dates are flexible and you want the same beaches at lower cost, aim here.
July and August turn hot and humid, with heavier showers and rising storm risk. September is the month to avoid: it is the statistical peak of the hurricane season, and many French-side restaurants and small hotels close for the low season. October is still unsettled. November is the transition back, with the season restarting and Saint-Martin Day on 11 November.
Crowds, prices and events
Christmas to Easter is the peak. Rooms, car rentals and flights cost the most, and the best tables in Grand Case need booking days ahead. February brings French-side Carnival parades in Marigot, and early March brings the Heineken Regatta, which fills the marinas. April brings Dutch-side Carnival in Philipsburg, with road closures around Carnival Village.
May to June is the quiet, cheaper window: the same weather pattern, fewer people, easier reservations. July and August are quiet but hot, with Bastille Day fireworks on 14 July and Schoelcher Day in Grand Case on 21 July. September and October are the cheapest and emptiest months, and also the ones where closures and storm risk can change your trip.

When to book
For December to March, book accommodation and a car two to four months ahead; for the Christmas and New Year week, earlier. High-season ferry seats to Anguilla and St Barths are worth reserving a few days out.
For May, June and November you can usually book a few weeks ahead and still find good rooms. For July, August and October, check that your chosen hotel and restaurants are actually open before you commit, because low-season closures are common on the French side.
Practical notes
The island is split between the French side (Marigot, Grand Case, Orient Bay) and the Dutch side (Philipsburg, Simpson Bay), with an open border you cross freely. Weather and prices are the same on both sides; the difference is where you sleep and eat.
Hurricane season runs June to November. Irma in 2017 showed what a direct hit can do, so if you travel in August, September or October, take travel insurance that covers weather disruption and check forecasts in the days before departure. Outside the storm peak, the main seasonal effect is rain: short, heavy showers rather than all-day wet.
