Saint-Léon-le-Grand
Skip as a base: it is a 992-person farming village with one heritage church. Give it 1–2 hours on a Maskinongé drive, or sleep nearby in Louiseville.
Saint-Léon-le-Grand is a small agricultural municipality in the Maskinongé MRC, about 6 km north of Louiseville on Route 349. Its one draw is the parish church, built 1819–1824 and the oldest in the Trois-Rivières diocese. There is no hotel, no restaurant row and no transit: you come by car, look at the church, and move on to Louiseville, Saint-Paulin or the Lac Saint-Pierre shore.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No fuel, no grocery and no lodging in the village: fill up and buy food in Louiseville.
- The church is an active parish: check mass times before walking in, and do not enter during services.
- Winter roads here are rural and lightly ploughed; snow tires are mandatory in Québec from 1 December to 15 March.
- Cell coverage is fine in the village but patchy on the back rangs.
Very low crime; the real risks are rural driving, deer and moose on Route 349 at dusk, and winter ice. 911 works everywhere.
