Saint-Joseph-du-Lac
Go for one day in September or October for orchards and the squash farm, or skip it: no train, no hotel, no evening.
Saint-Joseph-du-Lac is an apple-and-squash farming municipality of about 6,200 people on the lower Laurentians, 40 km west of Montréal on Autoroute 640. There is no lodging and almost no public transport, so it works as a half-day or full-day drive from Montréal, Laval or Oka, and only in the harvest window. Outside September and October there is little reason to come.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No hotel, motel or campground in the municipality: book elsewhere.
- Harvest weekends are crowded; arrive at opening or after 15:00.
- Many farm shops and the squash centre close outside Sep–Oct; check before driving.
- Some farm roads have no shoulder and no lighting: do not walk between farms at dusk.
- Sales tax is added at the till; posted prices are before tax.
Very safe; the real risks are driving the 640 and farm roads, harvest-weekend traffic, and walking between farms after dark. 911 for anything urgent.
