What works with kids, by age band.

  • Saint-Gilles is easy with children in the dry season: the L'Hermitage lagoon has calm shallow water, shaded lawn and lifeguard cover in the supervised zone. Reef shoes are worth buying because of coral, urchins and sharp rocks.
  • Kids under 5 tend to like the marina glass-bottom boat and the turtles at the Kelonia centre in Saint-Leu; older children enjoy snorkelling and the whale trips from July to October (check minimum age and lifejacket policy).
  • Strollers work on the port promenade and the back-beach paths, but sand makes them heavy at the beach; a carrier is easier. Boucan Canot has a rough sea: keep children out of the water unless the beach is marked open.
