Saint-Cloud
Base in Paris and give Saint-Cloud half a day for the park; sleep here only if you want green space and a 25–35 min train into the city.
Saint-Cloud is a wealthy western suburb of Paris, not a destination in its own right. Its one real sight is the 460-hectare Domaine de Saint-Cloud, the former royal and imperial estate whose palace burned in 1870. Everything else — the old village, the ceramics museum at Sèvres, the Mont-Valérien — is a short hop away. Most travellers come for an afternoon in the park and leave.

Get around
Transilien L from Paris Saint-Lazare stops at Le Val d'Or and Saint-Cloud; the route loops around the north-west, so RER A to La Défense then Transilien U is often faster. Tram T2 links Les Coteaux, Les Milons and Parc de Saint-Cloud with Porte de Versailles. Metro line 10 ends at Pont de Saint-Cloud across the river in Boulogne-Billancourt; buses 160, 460 and 472 run up Rue Dailly. The town is hilly — walking from the Seine up to the station is a workout. A free town shuttle runs on weekday daytime (check the current timetable).
