One night is enough for Saijō: the railway museum, the uchinuki springs walk and Kōmyō-ji. Add a second night only for the October 14–17 festivals or a Mt. Ishizuchi hike.
Saijō is a mid-sized Ehime city on the JR Yosan line between Matsuyama and Niihama, known across Shikoku for its free-flowing spring water (uchinuki), its mid-October danjiri festivals and as the rail gateway to Mt. Ishizuchi, the highest peak in western Japan. Temples 60–64 of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage sit inside the city limits. Sights cluster near Iyo-Saijō station, so a single night covers the town; the festivals and the mountain are the two reasons to stay longer.

Trains and buses are infrequent outside the JR Yosan line. Seven stations lie inside the city limits; express trains stop only at Iyo-Saijō and Nyūgawa, while local 'one-man' trains stop at all seven roughly hourly. Setouchi Bus regional lines pass through hourly from morning to about 20:00. Rental bicycles at the Saijō Tourism Center beside Iyo-Saijō station cost ¥200/hour and the centre is flat. Scams and watch-outs
- Say 'Iyo-Saijō' (伊予西条) when buying tickets: there is a different, much smaller Saijō in Hiroshima prefecture.
- Buses and trains thin out after about 20:00; plan the last leg before dinner.
- Festival nights (Oct 14–17) fill every hotel in the city: book months ahead or sleep in Niihama or Imabari.
- Rural areas of the 509 km² city have little English signage; carry the Japanese address of your destination.
- Mt. Ishizuchi access is by a morning bus from Saijō station to the ropeway, with limited runs: check times before committing.
Saijō is a low-crime, quiet city; the real risks are infrequent last buses, unlit rural roads after dark and August heat on the Ishizuchi trails. Japan's overall safety line applies: 110 police, 119 fire and ambulance.
