Sagunto is a working town of about 65,000 people split in two: a hilltop old town with Iberian, Roman and Moorish remains, and a port district 5 km away with 13 km of sand. The Roman theatre and the castle are free and open six days a week. Most travellers see it as a day trip on the C6 train from Valencia, about 30 minutes each way.

The old town is walkable in 20 minutes end to end. AVSA bus line 102 links the old town with the port and beaches, single fare about €1.45, no transfers. Taxis wait in front of the train station. A car helps for Almardà and the Marjal dels Moros wetland.

Sagunto is a calm, low-crime town; the real risks are summer heat on the castle hill, the unlit climb after dark and pickpockets on the Valencia train at rush hour.
