Sag Harbor
Half a day to one full day: walk the historic whaling village, eat at a waterfront restaurant, then head out. Not a base for the Hamptons.
Sag Harbor is a small, walkable whaling-era village on Long Island's South Fork. Its main street (Main Street) has boutiques, galleries and a handful of good restaurants. The waterfront is a working harbour with a short pier. Most visitors spend 3–5 hours here as part of a Hamptons day trip or a weekend stop between the ocean beaches and the vineyards.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Parking: metered on Main Street; free lots fill by 10:00 on summer weekends.
- The American Hotel restaurant is expensive and often booked: reserve ahead.
- Ferry to Shelter Island runs year-round but schedules thin in winter: check the operator's site.
- Many shops and restaurants close on Mondays and Tuesdays outside summer.
Very safe. Normal precautions: lock your car, don't leave valuables on the beach. Summer crowds mean pickpocket risk on Main Street — keep your wallet in a front pocket.
