Go only if you have a car and want the Pinaleño Mountains or Gila Box: 1–2 nights, not a base for eastern Arizona.

Safford is a small Gila Valley town in eastern Arizona, about 2 h 30 min by car from Tucson or Phoenix via Globe. There is no public transport and the town itself is thin on sights; the reason to come is the surrounding Coronado National Forest, the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area and the Mount Graham observatory tours. One or two nights covers it, and a car is required.

Get around

A car is essential: there is no public transport in Safford or Thatcher. US-70 (Thatcher Boulevard) bisects the town; US-191 runs south to I-10 near Willcox and north toward Morenci. Rental cars are available locally (Enterprise on W US-70, weekdays only).
