Go for 2 nights with a car: ferries from Niigata run 2.5 h (car) or 1 h (jet), and the island is 250 km around — a day trip wastes the crossing.
Sado is a 50,000-person island 45 km off Niigata, reached only by ferry. Its 2024 UNESCO gold mines, barrel-boat harbour and two mountain ranges need a car and at least two nights; the crossing alone eats half a day, and winter cancels ferries and closes the mountain road.

Get around
Rent a car in Ryōtsu after the ferry — coastal roads are winding and buses are sparse. A full coastal loop is over 250 km and takes a day. Electric bicycles rent from about ¥500 for the first hour, capped near ¥2,000 a day. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter brings cancelled ferries and closed roads; the Ō-Sado Skyline road shuts from late November to April.
- The Naoetsu–Ogi ferry's future is uncertain: confirm it is still running before you rely on it.
- The Teradomari–Akadomari line has been cancelled since May 2019 despite still appearing on some official pages.
- A permit is needed to walk near the Mt Kinpoku summit (Self-Defense Forces area); it is easy to obtain.
- The gold mine tunnels are cold — bring a jacket.
Very safe; the real risks are winter weather, winding coastal roads and sparse night-time fuel and food. Fill up and eat before dark.
