Sackets Harbor

Sackets Harbor is a village of about 1,450 people on Lake Ontario in New York's North Country, roughly 10 miles southwest of Watertown. It was a US naval base that held off two British attacks in the War of 1812, and the battlefield, navy yard and 1801 founder's mansion are the reason to come. The historic core is under a mile across, so you tour it on foot. One night is enough; two if you add a lake beach, a brewery evening and a day trip to Watertown or the Thousand Islands.

Get around
The village core is under a mile end to end, so walk or cycle. A car is needed for the battlefield's outer trails, the farm, the campground and any day trip; NY 3 (Arsenal Street) links the village to Watertown. Boats can cross from Kingston, Ontario, on Lake Ontario — check customs and marina arrangements before you set out.
