Give Saarbrücken one full day plus one night: old St Johann, the Baroque churches and the Völklingen ironworks. Two nights if you add a Saarland day trip.
Saarbrücken is the small capital of Saarland, on the French border, 1 h 50 min from Paris by TGV and about 2 h 30 min from Frankfurt. The centre is walkable in half a day; the UNESCO Völklingen ironworks, 10 minutes out by train, is the reason most travellers stop. It works as a one-night break between Paris and Frankfurt, or as a base for the Saar loop.

Get around
The centre is walkable end to end in about 25 minutes. City buses and one tram line (Saarbahn) cover the rest; the Saarbahn also runs across the border to Sarreguemines in France, about 30 min. Buy tickets from machines before boarding.
