Rye
Give Rye one night, two at most: the cobbled centre is a half-day, then use it as a base for Camber Sands, Winchelsea and Battle.
Rye is a small East Sussex town of about 4,500 people whose medieval centre survived because the sea retreated two miles and trade moved away. Trains from Ashford International take 20 minutes, so it works as a car-free overnight stop between London and the south coast. One night covers the town; add a second for the beach and Battle.

Get around
Walk. The old town is small and steep, with cobbles that punish wheeled bags. Bus 101 runs hourly to Hastings (about 50 min) and Bus 313 runs to Northiam every two hours for Great Dixter. Rye Hire rents bicycles. Taxis are few: book ahead for early trains or Camber.
