Ryde
Base in Ryde for 2 nights if you arrive by ferry from Portsmouth: pier, beach and steam railway are here; skip it as a day trip from the mainland.
Ryde is the Isle of Wight's largest town and its front door: the 681 m pier takes the Wightlink FastCat from Portsmouth and the Island Line train to Shanklin. Georgian and Victorian terraces rise from the Esplanade, with a sandy beach, arcades and a promenade to Puckpool. Two nights covers the town and one inland day; most visitors use it as a base rather than a destination in itself.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Ferries and hovercraft stop in bad weather: keep a buffer before a flight or train on the mainland.
- The pier is long and exposed; wind and rain make the walk to the FastCat unpleasant.
- Seafront arcades and food outlets close out of season; check before a winter trip.
- Island Line trains are former London Underground stock with limited luggage space at peak times.
Ryde is a low-crime seaside town; the real risks are weather-cancelled ferries, strong currents off the beach and late-night drinkers around the Esplanade in summer.
