Rydal
Go for a half-day on the train from Lithgow or Sydney, or time a visit to the September daffodil weekends or the February show; there is no reason to sleep here.
Rydal is a tiny railway village west of Lithgow with a station, a pub, a church and a handful of gardens. Trains are the point: the Blue Mountains Line and the Dubbo XPT both call, but only a few times a day, so the trip is built around a timetable rather than a sightseeing list. Two events, the February agricultural show and the September daffodil weekends, are the only times the place fills up.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Trains west of Lithgow are diesel and run only a few times a day: check the timetable and plan the return before you leave.
- The Dubbo XPT is a request stop at Rydal: you must tell staff you want to get off, or the train will not stop.
- No taxi rank, no rideshare and patchy mobile coverage in the surrounding valleys.
- Summer can pass 35 °C with no shade on the platform; winter mornings drop near freezing.
- Carry water and food: the village has very limited opening hours for shops and the pub.
A quiet village with no real street crime; the genuine risks are heat, frost, unsealed road edges and being stranded when the last train has gone. Tell someone your plan and keep the timetable on your phone.
