Russell
Russell, Ontario
Skip as a base. Russell is a 30–40 min drive from Ottawa: go only as a half-day stop for the museum and the rail trail, or sleep here if Ottawa beds are full.
Russell is a small English-speaking town in Eastern Ontario, about 5,000 people, paired with French-speaking Embrun 3 km east in the same township. Its draw is a rail-trail network, two conservation areas and a two-building local museum. There is almost no visitor infrastructure: one inn, a pub and a pizzeria. Treat it as a half-day from Ottawa or a cheap bed outside the city, not a destination in itself.

Get around
A car is the practical answer: the village is compact but the conservation areas and trailheads sit on its edges. OC Transpo route 222 reaches the Vars park-and-ride on weekday afternoons only, then it is a short taxi to Russell. Local taxis (Blue Line, Capital) cover the gap.

- Walkable to the museum, parks and the pub; very few beds, so book ahead or look at Embrun.
- Vars / Burton Rd (north)
- Highway 417 access and the nearest inn; you need a car for everything.
- Embrun (3 km east)
- More rooms and restaurants in the same township; still a drive-or-taxi hop from Russell.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Commuter buses run at peak hours only and 417 Bus Line takes cash from the driver: check the current timetable before you rely on it.
- OC Transpo route 222 is a weekday-afternoon service to Vars, not a Russell service; budget a taxi for the last leg.
- Trails and conservation areas are unlit and unplowed in winter; ice is the real hazard.
- Village restaurants close early and some shut on Mondays: check hours the day you go.
Very safe by any standard; the real risks are winter driving on regional roads, ice on unmaintained trails and long gaps between open businesses.
