Runcorn
Skip as a base unless you have a reason to be here: one half-day covers the Old Town, Norton Priory and the bridges. Sleep in Liverpool or Chester instead.
Runcorn is an industrial Mersey crossing point between Liverpool and Cheshire, rebuilt in the 1960s as a New Town with a separate busway network and a mall at its centre. It has two town centres, a Norman castle ruin, the most-excavated monastic site in Europe and three bridges over the river. Most travellers pass through on the train; a half-day stop is enough.

Get around
The New Town was built with dedicated busways separate from the roads, so buses are quick between the Old Town and Shopping City. A dual-carriageway loop links each district by car. Walking and cycling are separated from traffic in the New Town; the Bridgewater Canal towpath runs from Runcorn station to Runcorn East, and Wigg Island is a car-free cycle route toward Warrington.
