Ruda Śląska
Skip as a base: it is a straggle of ten towns with no centre. Sleep in Katowice and ride the 17-min train out for the museums and the blast furnace.
Ruda Śląska is an industrial city of about 135,000 in the Upper Silesian metropolis, 17 minutes by train from Katowice. It has no single centre: ten former villages merged into one long settlement, so sights sit in different districts and you move between them by tram or bus. Two small museums and a preserved blast furnace are the draw, plus cheap beds if you are passing through. Most travellers see it as a half-day from Katowice, not a place to stay.

ZTM Metropolia runs almost all buses and trams across the Upper Silesian metropolis on one ticket system; buy tickets from machines or kiosks. Trains from Katowice run about every 20 min and take 17 min via Chorzów and Ruda Chebzie. Bus 130 links Katowice with Ruda Śląska and Halemba every 30 min; bus 118 runs Ruda Chebzie–Ruda Śląska–Bytom every 20 min.

- The blast furnace is fenced off and can only be viewed from outside; the museum plan has been discussed for years.
- Long-distance buses do not serve the city: change in Katowice.
A normal working city; the real risks are industrial traffic, dark unlit streets between districts at night and winter ice. Keep to lit main roads and use trams or taxis after dark.
