Coach tours from Queenstown
This is the default for travellers without a car and the easiest way to see the fiord in one day. Coaches leave Queenstown early, stop at Te Anau for a break, then run the Milford Road with photo stops at places such as Eglinton Valley and the Mirror Lakes. You get a cruise at the far end, then the drive back. Confirm the exact departure time, stop list and cruise length with the operator.
The day is long and mostly sitting. If you can, break it: stay a night in Te Anau before or after, or take a coach that starts from Te Anau, which cuts several hours of driving from the day (check).

Tips
Milford Sound is one of the wettest places in New Zealand, and rain makes the waterfalls better, not worse. Take a waterproof jacket whatever the forecast. Sandflies are fierce at the car park and on the cruise; bring repellent.
There is almost no mobile coverage on the Milford Road. Download offline maps and your booking details before you leave Te Anau. Fuel, food and accommodation are limited at Milford Sound, so plan around Te Anau.
If you have time, the drive in is half the trip: the Eglinton Valley, the Chasm and the Homer Tunnel are worth the stops.
