How to get from Paris to Nice

Flying is the fastest option on paper. Paris Orly and Paris Charles de Gaulle both have frequent flights to Nice Côte d'Azur, with about 1h35 in the air. Add the trip out to the airport, security, baggage and the 20–30 minute bus or tram from Nice airport into the city, and the door-to-door time lands near 4h30. That is roughly an hour better than the train, and it costs more once you pay for airport transfers at both ends.

The train wins on everything else. It leaves from Paris Gare de Lyon, in the city, and arrives at Nice-Ville, a 10–15 minute walk from the seafront and the old town. There is no baggage fee, no security queue and no transfer at either end. On price, a TGV ticket bought a month or two out can start around €35 in second class; the same seat bought the week of travel often costs €110–€180. If your dates are fixed, book as soon as they open.

The cheapest realistic route is a direct TGV booked early, or a low-cost high-speed service on the same line where one runs. A change in Marseille can be cheaper than a direct train on some dates, but it adds time and a platform change. Buses are cheaper again, from about €30–€60, but take 12–14 hours overnight and are a poor use of a short trip.

Train. Direct TGVs run from Paris Gare de Lyon to Nice-Ville through the day, with the fastest schedules around 5h45 and most around 6h. Some services require a change at Marseille Saint-Charles; the connection is straightforward but adds 45–60 minutes. Second class is fine for this length of trip; first class adds space and a quieter carriage for a modest premium. Seat reservations are included with the ticket, and there is a bar car.

Flight. Air France and low-cost carriers fly the route many times a day from both Paris airports. Fares swing widely: a booked-ahead seat can be €60–€90, while a peak-summer or last-minute fare can pass €200. Nice airport sits about 7 km west of the centre; the tram and express buses run into the city, and a taxi costs more. Factor in getting to a Paris airport, which is 30–50 minutes from the centre by train.

Coach. Long-distance coaches run overnight and are the cheapest scheduled option, but 12–14 hours in a seat is a hard trade for one night of a holiday. They suit students and very tight budgets, not a first trip.

Car. Driving is 8h30–9h30 on the autoroutes, with tolls on most of the route and heavy traffic around Lyon and Aix-en-Provence in summer. It only makes sense if you plan to stop along the way or need a car in Provence and on the Riviera. One-way rentals between Paris and Nice usually carry a drop-off fee.

Book trains on the SNCF Connect site or app, or at a station counter. Tickets go on sale months ahead and the cheapest buckets sell first, so book as soon as your dates are fixed. A TGV ticket is tied to a specific train; changes are possible on some fares for a fee, and refunds depend on the fare type. If you are travelling in July or August, or around a French public holiday, book early and expect the lowest fares to be gone.

Flights are best booked direct with the airline, which keeps changes and refunds simpler. Compare dates before you commit: midweek and early-morning departures are usually cheaper. For coaches, book direct with the operator; seats are assigned and the cheapest fares are non-refundable.

For a car, compare one-way rentals before booking, and check whether the drop-off fee is included in the quote. If you only need a car in Provence or on the Riviera, take the train down and rent there instead.

Paris Gare de Lyon is a large station with several halls; check the platform number on the departure board and allow 20–30 minutes before departure. Nice-Ville is central, but if you are staying in the old town or near the port, a tram or short taxi from the station saves a walk with bags.

The line south passes through Provence, and a stop in Avignon, Arles or Marseille is easy to add on the way. If you are combining Paris and the Riviera, the train lets you break the journey rather than fly over it.

Summer on the Riviera is hot and crowded, and the cheapest fares and rooms go first. May, June, September and October give better prices and easier seats. Buy a French eSIM before you travel if you want data on arrival without hunting for a shop.
