How to book
Book the train on Amtrak's own site or app. Fares rise as departure approaches, so 2–4 weeks ahead is the sweet spot; the cheapest buckets sell out first on Friday and Sunday trains. Choose Niagara Falls, NY as the destination, not Niagara Falls, Ontario — the Canadian station is a separate stop on the same line, and you need a passport or visa to get off there.
For flights, search Buffalo Niagara International (BUF), about 30–40 minutes from the falls by car or shuttle. Compare on the airline's site and on a fare aggregator, then book direct with the airline so changes are simpler. Buses sell out on holiday weekends; book a few days ahead. If you drive, reserve a rental car early for summer and fall weekends, when the region fills up.

Sit on the left side of the train heading north for the Hudson River views in the first hour or two out of New York. The ride is long but scenic through the Hudson Valley and along the Mohawk. Wi-Fi and power outlets are available on most cars, so it is a workable travel day.
Decide which side of the falls you want before you book. Niagara Falls, NY is quieter and cheaper; Niagara Falls, Ontario has the bigger hotel strip, the casino and the best views of the Horseshoe Falls. Crossing between them needs a passport or visa and can take 30–60 minutes at the border.
The falls are busiest from late June to early September and on holiday weekends. May, June and September give you the same water with smaller crowds. Winter is cold and some attractions close, but the ice formations are the reason some people come.

The train follows the Hudson River north from New York to Albany, then turns west along the Mohawk River to Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo before reaching Niagara Falls. Stops include Yonkers, Croton-Harmon, Poughkeepsie, Albany-Rensselaer, Schenectady, Utica, Rome, Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo-Depew.
By road, Interstate 87 runs north to Albany, then Interstate 90 west across the state to Buffalo and Niagara Falls. The drive is straightforward and mostly toll-free except for parts of I-90.
