How to get from Montréal to Quebec City

Four ways cover the 250 km between the two cities. The train is the default for visitors because both stations are in the centre of town: Gare Centrale sits under the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montréal, and Gare du Palais is a short walk from Old Québec. The bus is cheaper and runs later. Driving gives you flexibility and stops along the way, such as Trois-Rivières. Flying exists but saves nothing once you add the trip out to Mirabel or Trudeau and back in from Québec's airport.

Book the train on VIA Rail's own site or app. Fares are tiered: the cheapest Escape-type seats sell first, so booking two to four weeks out usually costs far less than buying on the day. Your ticket is a QR code on your phone; there is no need to print it. Arrive 20–30 minutes before departure at Gare Centrale, which is busy and has security-style boarding queues at peak times.

Buses are booked on the operator's site or at the station counter. Seats are rarely sold out except around holidays, but booking online locks in the lower fare band. If you drive, note that parking in Old Québec is limited and expensive; a hotel with parking or a lot on the edge of the walls is easier.

Sit on the left side of the train leaving Montréal for river and farmland views on the stretch past Drummondville. The train has Wi-Fi and a café car, so it is a working trip for many locals.

In Québec City, Gare du Palais is inside the old town, about a 10-minute walk to Place d'Armes and the Château Frontenac. If you arrive by bus, the station is a little further out; local buses and taxis cover the last stretch. Driving in from Autoroute 20 or 40, use the park-and-ride or a downtown lot rather than circling the walls.

Winter changes the maths: snow can add time to a drive and cause delays on the road, while the train runs on schedule more often. In summer and during the February carnival, book transport and accommodation together, as both fill up.

The corridor runs northeast from Montréal along the St. Lawrence. The train and Autoroute 20 follow the south bank through Drummondville; Autoroute 40 follows the north bank through Trois-Rivières.
