How to get from Milan to Lake Como

Lake Como is not one place: Como town sits at the southern tip, while Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio are up the lake and reached by ferry or a different rail line. Most travellers mean Como town, which is the simplest and cheapest leg. Decide your actual destination before you buy a ticket, because Varenna and Lecco are served by separate lines from Milan.

Prices below are 2026 estimates for a one-way adult ticket. Regional fares are distance-based and fixed; fast services and seat reservations cost more. Always check the operator's site or app on the day, since timetables change with the season.

Regional trains do not need advance booking and cannot sell out in the same way as high-speed services: you buy a ticket and validate it before boarding. Tickets are available at station machines, at ticket offices, in the Trenord and Trenitalia apps, and from some newsagents. Buying on the app avoids the validation step.

For fast services, seat reservations are included and prices rise closer to departure, so book a few days ahead if you want a specific train. In summer and on public holidays, the Como line is busy with day-trippers; travelling before 09:00 or after 19:00 gives you a seat and a quieter ferry pier on arrival.

If you are heading to Bellagio or Varenna, buy a through ticket to Varenna-Esino and then a ferry foot-passenger ticket at the pier. Ferries are operated separately from the railway and are not included in the train fare.

Como San Giovanni is the main station and the one used by fast trains; it is about a 10-minute walk to the lakefront and the ferry terminal. Como Nord Lago, served from Milano Cadorna, is closer to the pier but only has regional trains. If your hotel is in Como town, either station works.

Luggage on regional trains is fine but there is no dedicated space on the older carriages; keep bags with you. On summer weekends, the return trains to Milan between 17:00 and 20:00 are the busiest of the day, so buy your return ticket in the morning or plan a later train.

Driving gives you flexibility for the smaller villages, but parking in Como and Bellagio is limited and expensive in high season, and the lakeside roads are slow. For a day trip, the train plus ferry is usually faster door to door.

The rail corridor runs north from Milan through Monza and Seregno to Como, with the fast line and the Cadorna line taking slightly different paths. The lake itself then runs north-east, with ferries linking Como, Cernobbio, Bellagio, Menaggio and Varenna. Varenna-Esino station sits on the Lecco line, which is why it is a separate booking from Como San Giovanni.
