How to get from London to Manchester

Three realistic choices: train, coach and plane. The train wins on almost every trip because it runs city centre to city centre, needs no airport transfer and is rarely delayed by traffic. The coach is the budget option and the only one that can beat the train on price, at the cost of two to three extra hours. Flying makes sense only if you are starting near Heathrow or Stansted and value the airport time less than the fare.

Fastest: the direct train. Euston to Piccadilly in about 2h 10m, with no check-in and no transfer at either end. Book an advance single and it is also good value; walk-up fares bought on the day can be several times higher.

Cheapest: the coach. National Express and Megabus run London Victoria to Manchester Coach Station in roughly 4h 30m–5h 30m, and advance seats often cost less than a train ticket's booking fee. If you are flexible on time and want the lowest fare, this is the one.

Flying is rarely the fastest door to door. Add the trip to Heathrow or Stansted, security, and the transfer from Manchester Airport into the city, and a 1h 10m flight becomes a 4–5h journey.

Train: buy direct from the operator or a UK rail retailer. Advance singles are released up to about 12 weeks before travel and are the cheapest fares; off-peak and anytime tickets cost more but let you travel on any train that day. A seat reservation is included on most long-distance services.

Coach: book on the operator's site or app. Fares rise as the coach fills, so booking a few days ahead usually saves money. Bring the booking reference; you do not need to print it.

Flight: book with the airline. Add the cost of getting to the airport and from Manchester Airport into the city when you compare, because those transfers can outweigh a cheap fare.

Travel outside the weekday peaks if you can. Monday morning and Friday afternoon trains are the busiest and the most expensive.

Euston is the London terminus for Manchester trains; Piccadilly is the Manchester terminus. Both are on their city's tram or tube network, so onward travel is easy.

If your plans are fixed, an advance single is almost always cheaper than a flexible ticket. If they are not, an off-peak return gives you room to change trains.

Allow extra time in winter and around bank holidays, when engineering works can add a replacement bus leg.

The train runs north-west out of London, through the Midlands and into Manchester. You do not need to change; the direct service covers the whole route. The coach follows the motorway network and can be slower in rush hour. Both arrive in the city centre, within walking distance of the main hotels and transport links.
