How to get from Bangkok to Phuket

Phuket is roughly 700 km south of Bangkok on the Andaman coast. The road and rail routes run down the peninsula to Surat Thani, and from there you either continue by bus across the isthmus or switch to a ferry for the islands. That extra leg is why ground travel takes most of a day.

Fares move with season and how far ahead you book. Treat the numbers below as 2026 estimates and check live prices before you commit.

Two Bangkok airports serve Phuket. Suvarnabhumi (BKK) handles full-service carriers and most international connections; Don Mueang (DMK) is the low-cost base and usually has the cheaper fares. Check which airport your ticket uses before you book a transfer across town — the two are about an hour apart in traffic.

Phuket International (HKT) sits at the north of the island. Patong is 30–45 minutes by road, Kata and Karon similar, and Phuket Town about 45 minutes. Airport buses and shared minivans run to the main beach areas; a metered taxi or a pre-booked transfer is faster if you land late.

Domestic check-in closes earlier than many visitors expect, and low-cost fares usually include only a small cabin bag. Add checked baggage at booking rather than at the gate.

Overnight coaches leave Bangkok's southern bus terminals in the evening and reach Phuket the next morning. You trade a night's sleep on a reclining seat for a much lower fare, and you arrive tired. Book a lower-deck or VIP-class seat if you want more room.

The train does not reach Phuket. You ride the southern line to Surat Thani, then take a bus or minivan across to the island, or a ferry if you are heading to the Gulf islands instead. This is the cheapest way to cover the distance, but the connections add hours and are worth checking the day before.

If you only want to save money, compare a discounted flight against the bus. Once you add a night's accommodation you would have paid for anyway, the gap often closes.

Book flights directly with the airline or through a reputable agent. Low-cost carriers in Thailand sell through their own sites and apps, and booking direct makes changes and refunds simpler if a schedule shifts.

For buses and trains, use the operator's own counter or an official booking channel. Seats on overnight coaches and on the Surat Thani trains fill up around holidays such as Songkran and New Year, so reserve a few days ahead at those times.

Pay in baht where you can. Cards are widely accepted for flights; smaller bus operators may prefer cash.

Phuket's high season runs November to April, matching the Andaman coast's dry months. Fares and hotel rates peak then, and the cheapest seats go first. If you are travelling in that window, book flights several weeks out.

The green season brings lower prices and afternoon rain rather than all-day washouts. Flights still run, but build slack into any same-day connection.

Phuket is also an air hub for the Andaman side, so it can be cheaper to fly here and continue by boat or road to Krabi, Koh Lanta or the Phi Phi islands than to backtrack through Bangkok.
