How to book
Book coaches on the operator's own site or app. InterCity sells fixed-time fares and, on some routes, flexible passes; the earlier you book, the lower the fare band. You get an e-ticket, so no printing is needed.
For a rental car, compare pickup at Auckland Airport versus a city branch. Airport pickups add a surcharge but save a transfer. One-way rentals into Rotorua are common and usually carry a drop fee; check before booking.
If you are flying, book directly with the airline. Rotorua Airport is about 10 minutes' drive from the centre, and taxis or rideshares meet most arrivals.

Tips
The bus drops you in central Rotorua, within walking distance of the lakefront, the i-SITE and many motels. If your accommodation is out at Ngongotahā or near the geothermal parks, plan a taxi or local bus for the last leg.
Driving south on a Friday afternoon or the first day of a long weekend means traffic out of Auckland. Leave before 2pm or after 7pm to avoid the worst of it. The SH5 section over the Mamaku Range is winding; allow extra time in rain or fog.
There are decent stops on the way. Tīrau has cafés and a bakery right off the highway, and Matamata (for Hobbiton) is a short detour from the SH1/SH5 junction. If you are driving, Tīrau and Cambridge make easy breaks.
Mobile data is useful for maps, bus tracking and booking changes. A local eSIM is cheap and activates on arrival.
