Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Sleep one night inside the wall to see the town before 09:00 and after 18:00, when the coach groups have gone. A day trip from Nuremberg works but costs you both quiet hours.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a small Franconian town on the Romantic Road, about halfway between Frankfurt and Munich, with a 14th-century wall still circling the old centre. It is a free imperial city grown rich in the 15th century and now a heavy coach-tour stop: the same streets feel completely different at 08:00 and at 13:00. The town is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes, so the question is not what to see but when to be there.

Get around
On foot: the old town is about 15 minutes end to end, and the wall walk from the Spitaltor to the Klingentor takes about 30 minutes without stops. A car inside the wall is unnecessary and often impossible; park at P1, P2, P4 or P5 outside the gates and walk in. Bikes are good for the Tauber valley in spring and summer.
