Rossland
Give Rossland 2 nights in winter (ski Red Mountain) or 1–2 in summer (bike Seven Summits); base downtown on Columbia Ave and walk.
Rossland is a former gold-mining town of about 3,700 people in the West Kootenays, built on steep streets inside an old volcanic crater. It runs on two seasons: powder skiing at Red Mountain from December to March, and mountain biking and hiking on the Seven Summits ridge from mid-July to late September. Downtown is compact and walkable, but the hills are real, and you need a car or shuttle for the resort and the trailheads.

BC Transit (West Kootenay Transit System) runs Monday–Saturday service in the region, including route 46 between Rossland and Trail in about 24–27 minutes; no Sunday service on that route. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Steep hills and winter ice: bring grippy boots or traction cleats.
- Locals jaywalk and mountain bikers cut across; drive slowly downtown.
- Red Mountain lift tickets, rentals and ski shuttles are cheaper booked ahead; holiday weeks sell out.
- Seven Summits is a 31 km ridge trail usable mid-July to late September only; carry water, there is no resupply.
- The nearest hospital is in Trail, about 10 km away; cell coverage drops on back trails.
- Airport shuttles run on reservation only in winter; book before you fly.
Rossland is a small, low-crime mountain town; the real risks are winter driving on Hwy 3B, steep icy sidewalks, and backcountry trails with no cell signal. Tell someone your route and carry water.
