Roseau is a base, not a destination: give the town a half-day, book a driver and a guide for every hike, and arrive by day because the airport is an hour or more away on mountain roads.

The honest verdict

Roseau is a small waterfront capital of a few streets between the sea and steep green hills. Its sights fit into a morning: the old market square, the cathedral, the museum and the botanic gardens. The rest of Dominica, including Trafalgar Falls, the Boiling Lake trail and the reef at Soufrière, is reached by road from here. Trips go wrong on transfers: the main airport is on the far side of the island, roads close in heavy rain, and there is no ride-hailing app, so cars must be booked. Four small clusters cover the town; hikes and falls are trips away from one kept bed.

Cash: The currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar (XCD, EC$), pegged to the US dollar; US dollars are often accepted. Keep EC$200 in small notes for guides, buses and small cafés; ATMs are in Roseau banks and may run dry at weekends.
