Ronda
Give Ronda one night, two if you hike the gorge: arrive by 10:00, see the Puente Nuevo and La Ciudad before the Costa del Sol coaches land.
Ronda sits on a 100 m limestone gorge in Málaga province, split into the old Moorish La Ciudad and the newer Mercadillo by the 1793 Puente Nuevo. It is small enough to walk end to end in 25 minutes, which is why most visitors see it in a day — and why one night, after the day-trippers leave, is the better call. It also works as a base for the white villages and the Sierra de Grazalema.

Get around
Walk. Everything in the centre is within 20–25 minutes on foot, but the streets are steep and cobbled, so wear shoes with grip. Park in the Mercadillo (underground garage under Plaza del Socorro, or Avenida Poeta Rilke) and leave the car there — parts of the old town are closed to non-resident traffic. Taxis cover the station run for about €7.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Two kisses on the cheek (right then left) between friends and when introduced socially; handshake in business; avoid: Being stiff — Spaniards stand close and touch arms
- Meal times: Late lunch and dinner; long sobremesa (chat after eating); avoid: Rushing to leave or asking for the bill with the last bite
- Noise: Join in the lively conversation; avoid: Reading loud voices as anger
- Siesta hours: Keep noise down in residential buildings 15:00–17:00 and after 23:00; avoid: Phone calls to people at lunch time
- Dress: Smart casual in cities; locals rarely wear shorts in Madrid in town; avoid: Swimwear or bare torsos away from the beach
- Regional pride: Ask about local dishes and festivals; avoid: Assuming Catalan or Basque are dialects of Spanish
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer afternoons hit the high 30s °C with little shade on the gorge paths: start sights at opening.
- Day-trip coaches arrive late morning and leave mid-afternoon — the bridge and La Ciudad are busiest 11:00–16:00.
- The gorge trail can smell after long dry spells; the river still carries some discharge.
- Restaurants on the main tourist streets charge more for less: walk one block off Carrera Espinel or into La Ciudad.
- Some sights keep short or split hours and close one weekday: check before you build a day around one.
Ronda is a safe, small town; the real risks are steep cobbles, summer heat and pickpockets in the day-trip crush around the bridge. Keep bags zipped in the Plaza de Toros and Puente Nuevo crowds.
