Rome is a small Mohawk Valley city of about 35,000 people, halfway between Syracuse and Utica on the Amtrak Empire Service line. Its one real sight is Fort Stanwix National Monument, a rebuilt Revolutionary War fort in the middle of downtown, free to enter. Most travellers pass through by train or stop for a night on a road trip between the Adirondacks and the Finger Lakes.
