Best time to visit Romania: weather and seasons by month

Romania is a year-round destination, but the season changes what you can actually do. The table below condenses the country-level verdicts: verdict is whether the month suits a general first trip, crowd and price are relative to the Romanian year, not to Western Europe.

Use it as a filter, then check the month you have chosen against the region you are visiting: Transylvania, the coast and the mountains do not peak at the same time.

Start with what you want to do, not with the calendar. If the trip is towns and villages — Bucharest, Brașov, Sibiu, Sighișoara, Maramureș, Bucovina — aim for May, June, September or early October. Days are mild, walking is pleasant, and the medium-season prices are still well below July and August.

If the trip is the Black Sea coast, the window is late June to early September, and August is the busiest and most expensive. If it is high-mountain hiking in the Bucegi, Făgăraș, Piatra Craiului, Retezat or Apuseni, plan late June to September and start early: summer afternoons bring thunderstorms. If it is the Danube Delta, May and September give the best birding with fewer mosquitoes than midsummer.

If it is skiing, mid-December to March at Poiana Brașov and Sinaia is the season; February snow cover is usually good, but check snow reports before booking (check). If it is Christmas markets, December works, but treat it as a cold-weather city break rather than a touring month: daylight is short and mountain roads may be closed.

Then check the calendar for collisions. Orthodox Easter usually falls in April or early May and fills a long weekend with services and closures. 1 May and 1 June are long weekends that fill mountain resorts. July and August bring the big Cluj festivals, which push up hotel prices in the city. 30 November and 1 December create another long weekend. All of these dates move or vary by year — check before booking.

Weather in Romania is regional, so one month can be right for one part of the country and wrong for another. Bucharest and the southern plain are continental: summers regularly hit 35–40 °C and winters bring snow and –10 °C cold snaps. Transylvanian towns sit higher and cooler, which makes summer the easiest season there. The Carpathians are cooler again, and the coast and delta are warmer and more humid in July and August.

Mountain roads are the main seasonal constraint. The Transfăgărășan usually opens in July; the closing date is late October in most years but depends on snow, so check the current status locally before you drive. Other high passes shut earlier. Outside summer, plan around lower routes rather than assuming a crossing is open.

Winter is not dead season everywhere. Ski resorts and the Christmas-market cities are busy in December, while many village guesthouses in Maramureș and Bucovina shut for the coldest weeks. November is among the quietest and cheapest months, but also the greyest, with delta boats and mountain roads mostly finished.

Book early for July, August and December if you want specific hotels, and late for January to March and November, when low-season prices apply across most of the country.
