Rolleston
Stop for fuel and one night only: Rolleston is a 309-person highway junction 105 km from Carnarvon National Park, with no sights of its own.
Rolleston sits where the Carnarvon and Dawson highways cross in Central Queensland, and its whole reason to exist for a traveller is the national park an hour south. There is one general store with fuel, a pub and a caravan park. Come for a bed and a full tank before the park, or skip it if you are not going to Carnarvon.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Fuel south of town is scarce: fill up here before Carnarvon or the road to Injune.
- Kangaroos and cattle on the highway at dawn, dusk and night.
- Phone coverage drops outside town; download offline maps before you leave.
- Summer heat and storm rain can close unsealed park access roads: check park alerts before driving in.
A quiet highway town and safe by any normal measure. The real risks are the drive, the heat and the distance between fuel stops, not crime.
