Use Rockville Centre as a one-night LIRR base for the South Shore bar-and-restaurant strip, not as a sightseeing trip: 35 min from Manhattan.
Rockville Centre is a village in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, on Long Island, about 21 miles (33 km) east of Penn Station by the LIRR Babylon branch. It is a residential commuter village with a busy downtown of bars, pizzerias and bakeries, plus a cathedral and a small Victorian house museum. Most travellers come for one night, a night out, or as a cheaper bed near JFK rather than for headline sights.

Get around
The village core is walkable: the LIRR station, Park Avenue, Merrick Road and the bar strip are within about 15 min on foot. For anything past the core use the N14/N15/N16 Nassau Inter-County Express buses from the station, a taxi from the rank at the station, or a car. Sunrise Highway (NY-27) cuts the village in two and is not pleasant to cross on foot.
