Rock Hall
Rock Hall, Maryland
Give Rock Hall one night, or a half-day stop between Chestertown and Kent Island: the town itself is 2–3 hours on foot, the rest is water.
Rock Hall is a working harbour town of about 1,300 people on Maryland's Eastern Shore, at the end of MD 20 where the road meets Chesapeake Bay. It is a boating and seafood stop, not a sightseeing city: marinas, a small concert hall, a national wildlife refuge on an island south of town, and crab houses on the water. Most travellers see it in half a day, or sleep one night and eat crabs at sunset.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Restaurants and cafés keep short hours and close early outside summer; check the day's hours before you drive in.
- Summer heat and humidity on the water; bring water for the refuge trails.
- Ticks and poison ivy on Eastern Neck trails — long trousers, stay on path.
- Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on the refuge and back roads.
- Weekend summer traffic on MD 20 and US 50 backs up; add 20–30 min on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons.
Very low crime; the real risks are water and weather — summer heat, sunburn on the boat, ticks on refuge trails, and driving after drinks at the crab houses.
